DROPS Reliable Securing Rev04
Secondary retentionLocking Ring Cotter Pins
Addendum to DROPS Reliable Securing Rev04

Purpose and scope
Reusable secondary retention may avoid repeated split-pin replacement. It must be practical to fit, inspect and remove with the required PPE.
For frequently opened nuts and pins, including temporary lifting and hoisting.
The equipment OEM specifies the arrangement
The OEM must specify or endorse the device, part number, size and installation configuration for the exact application. Do not use without that endorsement.
Verify supporting test reports and any applicable certification, including their scope and limitations.
Selection and use
Correct fit. Use the specified size and complete geometry. Do not substitute another size or bend the device to make it fit.
Avoid snagging. Avoid protruding sharp parts. Check exposed parts and clearance to surrounding equipment.

Clear locking. Locked and unlocked states should be obvious, or the device should lock automatically with engagement verifiable.
Inspect against clear limits. The manufacturer must provide acceptance and rejection criteria. Check function, damage, wear and corrosion; follow service-life limits.
Check the task with PPE. Verify installation and removal with required PPE. Compare the task and impact exposure with the specified split-pin arrangement.
Use a breakaway keeper wire. The keeper wire should break away easily if snagged, without dislodging the retention device.
